Monty Johnson had a dream and it is now a reality. Presently, Monty has
three enclosures, including a puppy-starting pen, and a plenty of kennel space.
Monty starts puppies, trains and conditions all age beagles and is a great resource
for a wide range of beagle owners.
His fulltime job is running dogs. He has a 250’ x 100’
puppy pen, a 5 acre enclosure and a 15 acre enclosure. There are plans
for an additional 25 acre enclosure. He has built and developed everything
the right way, including his field champions (just checkout his shed full of
trophies). His running grounds have a proper balance between food &
cover.
Monty’s practice is to house a smaller number of hounds for
more individualized attention. We made arrangements and happened to get
a couple in for what I like to call “beagle boot camp.” My main objective
was to get another beagler’s opinion and to have the extra weight run off my
hounds. I run year around but nothing compared to the individual attention,
training and diet a dog can get from going to a professional handler.
Together we worked out a training schedule and a finished objective. Fifteen
days later I picked them up and was wowed by the results. I knew what
I had before I left them with In-Line Kennels but I didn’t expect them to return
with such endurance. The wife and I also had a chance to work with Monty
one on one with our three pups, the day we picked up my other hounds.
It is not often you find someone who truly cares about people and admires your
hound of choice, BEAGLES.
No matter if you are looking to get one started, conditioned
for a field trial or for hunting season or just need some guidance give Monty
and Trish a call and make arrangements to get your beagling on track.
| The grounds are easily accessible and the shed & office are state

Besides a mixture of crop, Monty also feeds the rabbits using
these barrel feeders hidden in brush piles |
| The enclosures are designed so different dogs can be run at the
same time. They are also designed to help young dogs get started
then graduate upward from smaller to bigger running grounds. |

Field of Dreams. Monty’s property is generally flat and
great for following and watching your hounds run. It is a great
place to go and see good hounds run and to buy great hounds, which you
actually see run right in front of you. |
| Monty’s opinion is that a puppy should not learn to hunt by sight
chasing. His puppy pen is set up with dense cover. The pup
needs to learn to use its nose and not be tempted to expect sight chasing
as a hunting tactic. There are chances at sight chasing though because
Monty uses a mixture of wild rabbits and tame rabbits. The tam rabbits
are used to increase the scent, which helps the puppies trigger their
natural instincts. |

Strips are cut in the enclosure for owners and trainer to inspect
progress and in the puppy pen encourage youngsters to get busy. |
| Using a professional trainer will cut time in starting a puppy.
It will also help pups start on rabbits and not take chances with a puppy
running trash when started out in an unenclosed area. These two
are a tender age of 5 months. Nose down and tails working, they
are growing up fast!!!! |
