This lay out boat is a lot of fun in season and off season.  I tested one out on a float/camp/ eat trip on the Big Piney River.  I ended up catching my personal best stream small mouth from it.  Jeff Baxter the designer of this layout let me borrow one for the weekend to give it a try.  He told me lots of folks have told him they are pretty good for fishing too, but Jeff doesn't care.  This boat was designed for one thing and that is duck hunting. 

I used the Otter with a trolling motor for my weekend, but I also had to do a little paddling with the kiack paddle Jeff supplied.  The boat was very maneuverable with either means of locomotion.  The boat also has good stability.  There were many times I stood in the boat and fished.  I don't know if I would stand in the boat if it were 30 degrees while crossing a windy lake with my lab on the bow, but the boat is surprisingly stable for such a little thing.

The Otter is definitely low profile and easy to conceal in a marsh.  It is roomy enough to fit the kind of gear you need for a morning of duck hunting.  I loaded it down with all my camping and fishing gear and it rode well with the load.  One point through the weekend I even had a fishing partner and we were both comfortable.  The boat is designed for one hunter.  The optional lay back seat you can get for it really gives you a comfortable way to wait for the next flock with your head just a foot off the surface of the water.

I am a real practical guy and into about everything outdoors. I would have a hard time buying a boat I could only use for a month and a half out of the year.  This little boat does it's job well and sure would help any hunter put more ducks in the freezer.  It would also be a great little pond hopping fishing boat.  Easy to get into hard to get  places where the big bass live.
