Shawnee Trail C. A. (Southwest Region)
Information: 417/451-4158 Numerous ponds and abandoned strip mine pits are available for public fishing at Shawnee Trail Conservation Area. Largemouth bass fishing should be good in Pin Oak Lake. Numbers are low, but size structure is good: fish >20" have been captured. Bluegill fishing should be fair. Population size structure and numbers indicate quality size (=>6") bluegill should be present. Channel catfish, preferred by many area anglers, should provide excellent fishing. Numerous 10-20" channel catfish are present. Favorite baits include night crawlers, chicken livers and prepared dough baits. American lotus in Pin Oak Lake was treated with herbicide in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. This was done to prevent shallow areas of the lake from being covered by these plants. Improved angling should result. Facilities available include a gravel parking lot with disabled accessible dock and a boat launching ramp. Treatment of lily pads/American lotus was initiated in the four southern-most strip pits on the area in 2001. Channel catfish are stocked in four strip pits on the area that receive significant angling effort and should continue to provide excellent fishing. Access to the strip pits along the west side of the area should improve starting in 2002 and provide increased opportunity for anglers. annual fishing prospects courtesy MDC
