2002 YOUTH SEASON REPORT
Blind Luck?  I Think Not!

I got a daughter walking around on cloud nine tonight ,the new holiday inn blind we made came through with flying colors. We made it to the blind this morning and lit the heater and stayed nice and warm, watched a lot of deer and had a little breakfast and had good time but no shooting.

We went back out this afternoon about the time it starting sleeting and watched some turkeys come by, then about 4:20 we heard something running in the soybean field and here comes this buck chasing a doe, she grabs her gun puts it on him.  When he stops at about eighty yards she pulls the trigger and drops him in his tracks instantly, well we are high fiving each other and the doe still does not leave she just watching the buck.  I grab my video camera and start taping her and she stands there for a good five minutes when all of sudden here comes a monster buck.  He appears out of nowhere chasing her off and then stops and looks at his buddy as if what's the matter man you tired? Then he turns his attention back to the doe and the race is on again this buck was a 160 class and I sure would like to take him yet this year.

We walked up to her deer and she starting counting points. By the time she gets to ten she is a whopping and a hollering, she is as happy as a lark she gets the cell phone and calls mom and starts going on and on, then it is a call to the grandparents, and finally it is time to get the four wheeler and get him out and to the checkstation.  She has already figured out where she going to hang him on the wall so I guess I had better get him caped out.  This was one fast hunt one minute nothing ,thirty seconds later her buck is on the ground,  I guess all that practing paid off.

My wife says my head has swelled up a bit and my chest is puffed out like a strutting turkey.  I am as proud as dad could be, I think I got me a great hunting partner, she is just growing up way to fast.

Here is the blind we finally got ready and got in place the week before.  It measures 4 wide 8 feet long and has a six foot ceiling and has six plexiglass windows, shooting rest at each window, two chairs, carpeting, curtains, propane heater, and also a camcorder set up at each window to get the good video.  I'm sure the neighbors were happy to see it gone out of my driveway. At least they are waving at me again.  I didn't think they were ever going to get the beans out so we could get the blind in place. We were ready for the youth hunt and had the time of our lives.

This is my son Mick, and my nephew Ricky. My son is 14 yrs old. He passed on several does last year not having a good shot. His patience paid off this year. We know he isn't a monster buck, but he is a trophy to us all the same. Rick and Mick were on the side of a ridge and saw 2 deer on Saturday morning and 2 more Saturday evening, without getting a shot. Sunday morning they were back at the same spot, watching a thicket. They heard 2 bucks fighting, and then heard one running in their direction. The spike buck must have winded them. He stopped 15 yards broadside, and Mick got him with one shot, stopped in his tracks. The spike has 8" antlers and field dressed 100 lbs. He was using a 30-30 Marlin and shot with iron sights. They were approximately 1 mile from the truck. I waited what seemed like forever to congratulate and hug my son....LoL It took them 1/2 hour to get the deer down the hill to where I was waiting with the deer cart. Not sure who is proudest, dad or son. Thank you Rick for helping me out w/ the youth hunt. Thank you MDC for allowing our kids to go out and enjoy the great outdoors.

The MSIN wants your kids.  If you have photos you would like to share email them to us and we will get them on this special page dedicated to the outdoor kids of Missouri.  If you have a story to tell we would love to publish that too.

Missouri youths bag 7,500 deer without a mishap
Youngsters raised the number of deer harvested during the two-day youth segment of firearms deer season while setting an enviable safety example for adult hunters to follow.

JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri’s youth-only deer season is hitting the mark as a safe way for youngsters to learn how to hunt.

The Missouri Department of Conservation reported no accidents during the hunting period Nov. 2 and 3. Youngsters harvested 7,580 deer. That figure is 1,303 higher than last year, when the Conservation Department conducted the first hunting season exclusively for state residents aged 15 and under.

Youth hunters in Northeast Missouri bagged the most deer, with 1,187 deer brought to check stations in the region. West-central Missouri was second with 1,072. The other regional totals were: east-central, 933; central, 930; northwest, 912; Ozark, 799; southwest, 774; southeast, 694; Kansas City, 142 and St. Louis, 137.

Callaway County topped county harvest total with 191 deer bagged during the youth season. Pike County was second with 168, followed by Osage County where the harvest total was 162.

Missouri hunters are expected to harvest more than 200,000 deer during the 2002 firearms season. Three opportunities remain for hunters to head to the deer woods. The Nov. firearms segment takes place Nov 16 through 26. The muzzleloader segment runs Dec. 7 through 15, and the antlerless only portion of the season is Dec. 19 through 22.
